Is your child ready?
Most children are ready between 24 and 27 months.
Look for these readiness signs
- expresses an interest in using the potty
- imitates other family memebers
- able to communicate needs and understands words about potty training
- able to walk to potty, pull down pants, and sit down
- demonstrates irritation when diapers are wet
- is able to follow one step verbal instruction
Don't feel pressure to begin early
It can be easier to start in the summer
When NOT to begin Potty Training
Do not start Potty Training if something stressful is going on at home
How to start Potty Training
Potty Chair- choose a potty chair which is fun for your child and easy for you to clean
Books & Videos- start by reading a Potty Training Book at bedtime or watching an animated video
Imitation- Teach your child the steps of Potty Traiing
- Taking underwear off
- Sitting down
- Taking care of business
- Wiping
- Flushing
- Washing your hands
Routine- Take your child to the potty every 30 minutes. Have them sit for a few minutes and read a book together. Don't pressure and always praise your child, even if they were not able to go potty.
Motivation- Potty Training should be made fun and exciting for your child. Use positive reinforcement to train your child with Potty Chart, Stickers and fun rewards.
Potty Training Advice
- Don't begin too early. Wait until your child displays the readiness signs mentioned above.
- Give your child lots of liquids to make them have to Potty more often
- Make Potty Training Fun. Teach boys to aim with Potty Targets.
- Always praise your child for a job well done. Use Potty Charts to track success. Use a completion certificate when they are done.
- Never punish your child for an accident
- Do not use pull up type diapers. They are designed to pull the wetness away from the skin. Use cotton underwear with a plastic underpants to go over them.
- Never make your child sit on the potty for more tha a few minutes. You do not want them to think this is a time-out.
- Remember mistakes happen and soon the whole experience will be behind you.
